The Weather Station
ScooterCam's live weather readings come from a dedicated weather station installed on-site — not a regional estimate pulled from the nearest airport, but real conditions measured right where the cameras are.
What it measures
The station reports current temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall, and barometric pressure, updating frequently throughout the day.
How it fits into the site
Live station readings are blended with:
- Marine forecasts — wave height and period data sourced from nearby NOAA buoy stations and wave-forecast models
- National Weather Service forecasts — including nearshore marine forecasts specific to this stretch of Lake Michigan
- Sun and moon data — sunrise, sunset, and moon phase, used throughout the site including in sunset-quality scoring for the camera timelapses
Together these feed ScooterCam's weather and marine conditions pages, giving a fuller picture of what's happening on and around the lake than temperature and wind alone.
Why hyperlocal matters
Lake Michigan's shoreline weather — especially wind and wave behavior — can differ meaningfully from inland forecasts even a few miles away. A station physically on the shoreline captures conditions that a generic forecast for "South Haven" or "Saugatuck" often misses.
