The Project & History

ScooterCam started as a personal project born out of a love for the Lake Michigan shoreline near South Haven and Saugatuck — a desire to watch the lake's moods, sunsets, and weather in a way that felt local and personal, rather than generic.

How it's evolved

Early days. The site originally ran on WordPress, using a mix of plugins for weather data, sun and moon predictions, hero images, and video playback. It worked, but it was heavier and less flexible than a purpose-built site needed to be.

The move to custom PHP. The site was rebuilt from the ground up as a standalone PHP application — no WordPress core, no plugin dependencies for core functionality. A shared header/footer template system, a single consolidated configuration file, and a consistent "cameras and weather feed into flat cached files, pages read the cache" pattern replaced the old plugin-driven approach.

Growing capability. Over time the project added: a dedicated marine conditions page pulling in buoy and wave forecast data; sun, moon, and sunset-quality visualizations; a wind rose widget; social media publishing; and a hardware pipeline that moved from simpler camera captures to a scheduled, multi-camera timelapse system with its own health monitoring.

Where it stands today. ScooterCam is a mature, actively maintained system with redundancy and succession planning built into how it's run — not just a hobby project, but one intended to keep running reliably over the long term.

Why a Michigan LLC

ScooterCam Worldwide LLC exists to give the project a clean legal and financial structure — separating its costs and any revenue from personal finances, and making an eventual handoff to a successor straightforward rather than tangled.
